4.1.1 Introduction

The state of Israel is officially the homeland of the Jewish people, however there are many Jewish communities to be found all around the world. Sephardic Jews originated in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), whereas Ashkenazi Jews (German Jews) are those who migrated to the east, thus ‘Ashkenaz’ Jews came from Hungary, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine and Eastern Europe whereas Mizrahi Jews came from India, North Africa, Iran and Yemen.

This chapter focuses on the eating patterns of British Jews living in the UK.

Israel is located in the Middle East on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea (Figure 4.1.1). It has borders with Lebanon in the north, Syria in the north-east, Jordan and the West Bank in the east, and the Gaza Strip and Egypt in the south-west, and within its relatively small area is geographically diverse. Israel is the world’s only predominantly Jewish state, with a population of 7.5 million people, of whom 5.7 million are Jewish. Arabs form the country’s second largest ethnic group, and include Muslims, Christians, Druze and Samaritans.
